History
Tracy Aviary, the biggest and oldest of only two free-standing aviaries in the US, has expanded and changed during its more than 80-year existence to become a cultural monument, public garden, and environmental education and conservation, pioneer.
Education
Our education initiatives reach over 60,000 students annually throughout the Wasatch Front via interactive exhibitions, camps and seminars, and hands-on activities in schools and communities. These fascinating and enlightening interactions with birds from as near as the Great Salt Lake to as far away as the Andes Mountains can kindle the first critical sparks that push a life-long passion for the natural world.
Conservation
Tracy Aviary also seeks better to understand bird species and habitats via our conservation programs. Citizen science volunteers provide essential insights that influence choices affecting open space design and species survival, conserving Utah’s natural beauty and the richness of the Rocky Mountains for future generations.

Spring Break Field Days
Spring break is being reimagined!
Spring Break Field Days have been created to provide access to the excitement of Tracy Aviary’s spring break programs. Spring Break Field Days are admission-free days that coincide with the Salt Lake and Granite School Districts’ spring vacations. Educators will lead all-time favorite spring break camp activities for the whole family to enjoy!
Field Trips
Tracy Aviary welcomes school groups, community groups, and other organizations for field visits all year. There are lots to explore, with nine acres and over 100 bird species!
Every school group must bring one chaperone for every eight pupils. They cannot keep lunches or other things for your party, so either leave them in a vehicle or plan to bring them with you throughout your stay.
Teachers and chaperones are liable for their pupils’ conduct. Please meet these objectives to avoid your school being barred from attending Tracy Aviary. Please review the following expectations with your group before arriving at Tracy Aviary.
- Teachers and chaperones must always remain with their assigned pupils. This applies to all school groups, including middle and high school.
- Teachers, chaperones, and Tracy Aviary employees should be obeyed and followed.
- Please stay on the pathways to show respect for our property.
- Please refrain from touching or feeding any of the birds in our care.
- It would help if you cleaned up after yourself.
Little Kits Classes
DISCOVER NATURE’S PLEASURES WITH YOUR CHILDREN!
Little Kits pre-K classrooms, named after baby beavers, are for children aged 2 to 5. Classes last an hour and are held one day each week for six weeks. Stories, discovery, and tons of natural play are all part of the classes! Our objective is to assist your kid in establishing new friends, developing an interest in nature, and feeling at ease in their surroundings. They create all courses so that both the kid and their parent or guardian may participate.

Details
- 60 minutes long
- Attendance of adults and children
- Thursdays OR Saturdays, 9:30 – 10:30 a.m.
- Classes will be held at BOTH Aviary locations! The first three sessions in the series will be conducted at Tracy Aviary in Liberty Park, and the last three classes will be held at Tracy Aviary’s Jordan River Nature Center.
- Come prepared – class will be held outside, so dress appropriately!
- COVID-19 details – Masks are encouraged but not essential.
Beaver Lodge Playgroup
This autumn, students in grades K-5 are encouraged to participate in a natural playgroup. They know how crucial social-emotional development is for young children, yet COVID-19 has limited socializing time. The Beaver Lodge Playgroup is specifically intended for small groups of youngsters to enjoy time in nature while socializing and learning.
Distance Learning
Distance Learning programs provide LIVE interactive video conferencing services that allow Tracy Aviary to connect to your classroom, camp, or club with the touch of a mouse!
Tracy Aviary’s rich bird and botanic collection will pique the interest of K-8 kids from around Utah as our expert educators delve into environmental education themes such as
- Examining conservation concerns and success stories both locally and globally;
- Naturalist skills practice;
- Understanding the birds, plants, and surrounding environments using STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art, and math).

Tracy Aviary Teacher Tool Kits are meant to educate your kids about the natural world’s wonders and happenings! NATURE ART (GRADES K-4)
Investigate natural occurrences while producing artwork! Our Nature Art curriculum guide, filled with activities that can be done outside or indoors, enables children to learn about and create Eco Art, research the structure and function of seeds, and investigate the life of trees.

When you adopt, your kind donation goes directly to the care and upkeep of the bird or garden you’ve chosen to support! Along with a comprehensive adoption package, our program provides an opportunity for up-close encounters and one-on-one time with our bird care team and horticulturists.
